Seminar Series 2011/2012
The NCPOP Seminar Series has attracted a lot of interest from health and social care staff, academics, researchers, as well as legal and financial professionals.
On October 19th, Dr. Angie Ash, Swansea University delivered a presentation on Elder Abuse, Ethical Dilemmas & Multi-agency work – What are the Influences and Constraints on Professional Decision-Making in Adult Protection? This seminar was well attended and generated much interesting discussion on the topic.

NCPOP hosted its second seminar in the 2011/2012 series on 6th December 2011. A presentation was given on Older People’s Understandings of Elder Abuse by Dr. Janet Carter Anand, Queen’s University Belfast and Staff Perceptions of Elder Abuse was presented by Dr. Alice Coffey, University College Cork.

Upcoming Launch of NCPOP Study
NCPOP is undertaking a national study entitled ‘A Survey of Staff-Resident Interactions and Conflicts in Residential Care Settings for Older People’. This survey involved a representative sample of 64 (public, private and voluntary) nursing homes across Ireland. NCPOP will launch a report of the main findings of this study at UCD in early 2012 so please keep an eye on the NCPOP website (www.ncpop.ie) for the launch date.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) 2011
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) takes place every year on 15th June. On Wednesday 15th June 2011, the HSE, the National Centre for the Protection of Older People (NCPOP) and the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) hosted a conference on the issue of elder abuse in the Health Sciences Centre, UCD.
The conference had information and advisory stands from Age Action Ireland, Senior Helpline, NCPOP, HSE, Solicitors for the Elderly, Alzheimer’s Association and the Carers Association. The event was attended by over two hundred delegates from health, social care, legal and financial sectors.The conference was formally opened by Ms Kathleen Lynch T.D., Minister for Disability, Equality, Mental Health and Older People. The keynote address by Professor Mary Gilhooly of the Brunel Institute for Ageing Studies, Brunel University, London focused on recent research into financial elder abuse. Professor John Horgan, Press Ombudsman for Ireland, delivered the conference reflections. Video recordings and PowerPoint presentations from the day are available to download from www.ncpop.ie
The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Gerry Breen was also in attendance and signed the INPEA Mayoral Proclamation Against Elder Abuse. Deputy Commissioner of An Garda Síochána, Nacie Rice signed the INPEA Municipal Declaration Against Elder Abuse together with Dr. Martin McNamara, Dean and Head of UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems.
