Topic

'Dementia - What's in a Name? Quite a Lot Actually'

Outline

Dementia manifests itself in a variety of ways and is an umbrella term. Dementia describes a syndrome, a collection of symptoms and signs for which there are many causes. This definition of dementia places cognition at the centre-stage and is one view of dementia. What are the clinical and ethical implications of this view? What are the alternative views of dementia that can bring us to a broader understanding of the condition? What about the term ‘dementia’? Is it problematic, and, if so, should it be changed? This seminar addresses these and other questions.

The seminar will be of interest to practitioners, policymakers, researchers, advocates and anyone working in or with an interest in the field of dementia ad well as people with dementia and their families.
